DGNB Introduces New President: Manfred Hegger replaces Werner Sobek

For two years as president he shaped the destiny of the DGNB; now, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Werner Sobek is handing the managerial reins over to Prof. Dipl.-Ing. M. Sc. Econ. Manfred Hegger.

"Manfred Hegger is a proven expert in sustainable building and has at his disposal an extensive network of political contacts and associations. The post is in good hands", says a delighted Werner Sobek about the new man at the helm. During Mr. Sobek’s presidency, the DGNB Certificate 2009 was initiated and is now undergoing continuous development – both nationally, with new occupancy profiles, and internationally, with the first certificates in Europe and abroad.

His successor, Manfred Hegger, is an architect and professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt (Department of Architecture). Through his committed advocacy of the DGNB as a board member, he is already very well acquainted with the organization. “For the next months, my work will focus on the further internationalization of the DGNB Certificate. At Consense (the DGNB’s annual congress in June), we unveiled an international core system”, explains Mr. Hegger. “Another key component will be the high-quality training of auditors and consultants, making use of external training facilities, and enabling the dissemination of basic know-how on sustainable building throughout Germany”, he adds.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Bürklin will continue on as his deputy, which will ensure continuity at the top. As a board member, Werner Sobek will also continue to play a major role in developing the DGNB and supporting the new president in an advisory capacity.

The outgoing president thanked the staff at the DGNB’s main office for their excellent teamwork. After two years of working in an honorary capacity, Mr. Sobek acknowledged the over 850 members and the many other supporters, without whose voluntary engagement the DGNB would not have become so successful.

As a founding partner of HHS Architekten AG (Hegger Hegger Schleiff), the new president has been active in the sustainable building sector for many years, and has received numerous prizes and awards for his work. He achieved broad public recognition through the international Solar Decathlon event, a competition for energy-autonomous buildings run by the US Department of Energy. With a group of students, he claimed the prestigious prize twice in a row.

Manfred Hegger took up his post as president of the German Sustainable Building Council on 21 June 2010.
