Basics of Sustainable Building

Discover the key factors for creating liveable cities and buildings that will stand the test of time

Heatwaves, heavy rainfall, social division: climate change is transforming our cities and the way we live together. How can the construction and property sectors respond to this and create spaces that are sustainable in the long term? This course will show you practical approaches to designing the built environment in a way that is climate-resilient, resource-efficient and user-friendly. You will gain a concise overview of the key levers and how they interact – from neighbourhood planning to buildings and interiors.

The course is held in German.

With the DGNB System and practical modules, which build on the Basics of Sustainable Building course, you will deepen what you have learned and acquire the necessary know-how to be able to implement DGNB requirements for buildings and districts in practice.

Event details

  • Students* in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, construction or real estate management
  • Job starters and young professionals
  • Experienced professionals who would like to acquire initial knowledge about sustainable building
  • Generally interested people who would like to know more about the topic of sustainability in the context of construction

*Note for students: The Basics of Sustainable Building course is also taught free of charge at some colleges or universities as part of a DGNB university cooperation. You can find a list of our university partners here. The subsequent examination to qualify as a DGNB Registered Professional must be taken through the DGNB Academy and is subject to a fee.

In the Basics of Sustainable Building compact course, you will learn how challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and social inequality are already affecting the built environment today – and are in turn caused by it. You will gain an overview of potential solutions to these problems and come to understand how environmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects are interlinked. This makes it clear why only a holistic approach leads to sustainable outcomes.

As well as learning about fundamental principles and approaches, you will become familiar with the key tools for measuring and assessing sustainability aspects. The aim of the course is to provide a concise introduction to the subject, enabling you to contextualise the objectives and methods of sustainable planning and construction within your day-to-day work and to build on this knowledge to develop your specialist expertise.
