Johannes Kreißig elected to the Board of Directors of the World Green Building Council

Johannes Kreißig, CEO of the German Sustainable Building Council – DGNB e.V. and DGNB GmbH, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) for the next two years. The WorldGBC is the global umbrella organisation for sustainable building, which is committed to transforming the construction and real estate industry towards more sustainability. The DGNB is the official German representative in the network, in which organisations from around 70 countries are involved.

"We must not stop thinking and acting ambitiously in the construction sector if we want to make the necessary progress on major global challenges such as climate action," explains Johannes Kreißig. "The WorldGBC is one of the most important platforms for this internationally, which we have supported and actively helped to shape since the DGNB was founded. In this respect, I am delighted to be able to participate again in the organisation's highest strategic body in the next two years to promote our holistic approach to sustainability."

For Kreißig, his commitment to the WorldGBC's Board of Directors is his fourth term of office. He already held this role from 2010 to 2016. Most recently, Dr. Christine Lemaitre, also CEO of the DGNB, assumed this office.

Cristina Gamboa, CEO of WorldGBC, says: "Johannes Kreißig has been a true champion of sustainability. It is his commitment, expertise and strong leadership that has earned his place on our Board of Directors. Together with our fellow Directors, I look forward to working with Johannes Kreißig as we continue our collective journey to transform the built environment and deliver on the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Kreißig among the initiators of the DGNB

As one of its initiators, Johannes Kreißig played a significant role in the founding of the DGNB in 2007 and the development of the DGNB certification system. From the very beginning, the graduate mechanical engineer was involved in the council's Board of Directors before moving from an honorary position to a permanent position in 2016. He is managing director of DGNB GmbH - a wholly owned subsidiary of the council, to which the DGNB certification, the DGNB Academy and the DGNB Navigator are assigned. One focus of his work is the development of international markets, especially China. Since 2018, he has also held the position of the CEO of the DGNB e.V.

Following his studies at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Arizona, Kreißig worked as a research assistant at the Institut für Kunststoffkunde und Kunststoffprüfung (IKP) at the University of Stuttgart until 1998. There he was head of the Department of Holistic Accounting until 2001. He is co-founder of PE International (later thinkstep, now sphera), where he held various positions until 2016, most recently as Vice President Building & Construction. Born in Ulm, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU) and on the Board of Trustees of the BAU fair from Messe München.
