Creating Transparency. DGNB helping to develop the "Open House" platform for sustainable building across Europe

The goal of the DGNB is to advance and promote sustainable building, and encourage its widespread growth. In pursuit of this goal, the non-profit organization is currently working on "Open House", a three-year project of the European Union.

Begun in 2010 and involving 20 partners, this initiative will develop common indicators for the evaluation of sustainable buildings across Europe.  There is a critical need for a unified basis of assessment, as a wide variety of different approaches to the evaluation of sustainable buildings have been adopted throughout the European market, making it nearly impossible to compare results.

"Within the next few years, an EU-guideline for sustainable building will be developed, and we would like to contribute our extensive technical knowledge to the establishment of a common basis," explains Christine Lemaitre, DGNB CEO. The "Open House" project will be aligned with the development of current European standards for sustainable building, and will include common evaluation methods, some of which may already be in use in some form at either the national or the international level. The partners involved represent the research, industrial, and political sectors as well as consumer associations. This interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to mobilize the full spectrum of stakeholders, and ensures a highly practice-oriented perspective. "The DGNB is bringing its extensive expertise in sustainability assessment to the project, as well as access to its broad network of international partner organizations," emphasizes Dr. Eva Schminke, who advises the DGNB on European Standards and international research activity.
