The award is presented by the Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. in cooperation with the Federal Government, local and business associations as well as numerous NGOs, among them UNESCO and UNICEF. The framework for the award ceremony is the German Sustainability Day in Düsseldorf, the most frequently visited annual communication platform on sustainable development.

In 2012, together with the DGNB, a special award for sustainable building was launched.
