Consense 2014 - Preliminary Final Report

Meet the Leaders of Sustainability / Approximately 1,400 visitors at Consense on 1 and 2 July 2014 in Stuttgart. Prominent keynote speakers from architecture, politics and society on the stage, intensive workshops on select special topics in the seminars and a wide offering of innovative products and services in the exhibitor area.

Consense, the international trade fair and congress for sustainable building, investment, operations and maintenance, was well positioned on 1 and 2 July 2014 in Stuttgart. With around 1,400 visitors, it did not reach the record number from 2012, however. In 2012 the World Green Building Council attracted additional participants from abroad. The event has been organised since 2008 jointly by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and Messe Stuttgart.

The participants came from 13 countries, whereby the German-speaking world with Austria and Switzerland was the most strongly represented. Then came visitors from Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, France and the USA. 66 exhibitors from 5 countries were represented at the trade fair.

Consense once again lived up to its reputation as an event, which brings together all related industries. The professional group of architects, interior designers, planners and construction engineers was once again particularly strong, representing 36 percent of the visitors, followed by contractors, building energy and environment consultants, as well as project managers and developers. The percentage of decision-makers is once more well above 50 percent: 28 percent of participants are managing directors, members of executive boards and independent contractors, another 24 percent are active in management positions.

Consense supplied ideas and suggestions, innovations and impulses over the two days of the event. The congress participants became familiar with the "Fourth Dimension of Sustainability", which was presented by Prof. Götz E. Rehn, Alnatura, and they found out more at the Participation 2.0 by Wolfgang Teubner, ICLEI Regional Director of Europe. The high-ranking architects Diébédo Francis Kéré, Jean-Philippe Vassal and Kjetil Trædal Thorsen provided an exciting insight into the four visions of sustainably planned and built architecture.

This year topic forums on the key areas "Building", "Investment" and "Operations and Maintenance", which were supported by well-known partners and industry associations, were created as further attractions in the trade fair area: Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects, GEFMA - German Facility Management Association and the online magazine greenIMMO.

Six years ago Messe Stuttgart and DGNB came together to organise the first event, which specialised in sustainability with an international trade fair and congress. "A dynamic market with interesting growth prospects", states Sebastian Schmid, Department Director, Technology, Messe Stuttgart, who is convinced of the concept. "We adapt the concept to the needs of the market and further develop the event in the future accordingly."

Dr. Christine Lemaitre, President, DGNB: "We are working on the broad networking and internationalisation of the DGNB and want to spread the idea of sustainable building even further. Our key issues were once again able to be well implemented at Consense 2014. We also want to consistently and continuously further develop this objective in the future, acquire new cooperative venture partners and make good contacts."

Consense takes place every two years – the next event will be in June 2016. The exact date will be announced later.
