Sustainable building is a global concernTherefore the DGNB is also involved in international initiatives.

“Open House”: standard indicators for sustainable building.

The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has joined forces with 26 renowned partners from 11 European countries to contribute its expertise to advancing the European Union's research project.

Of the 900 available sustainability indicators, 46 were selected and further developed for assessing sustainable buildings in Europe. The fact that eighty percent of the Open House indicators are also represented in the DGNB Certification System is a clear demonstration of the DGNB System's international relevance and applicability.

Training for sustainability: the “GreenConServe” programme

DGNB was a consortium partner in this European Commission project with two objectives: to demonstrate possible innovation potential through training programmes, and to help companies reduce their CO2 emissions.

Communicating knowledge in a sustainable way: the EU “Construction 21” project

Construction 21 was an EU project within the Intelligent Energy Europe programme. Based on the UNO Agenda 21 guidelines it was aimed at improving the exchange of technical data and information on sustainable building in Europe. In particular the DGNB helped mobilise relevant target groups, contributing to local forums in all partner countries and taking responsibility for coordinating trans-European issues across local networks in selected cities and online forums.

Public Private Partnership projects. Looking ahead also means being considerate.

The aim of these international projects was to promote sustainable building in a comprehensive, overarching and high-profile manner. For this purpose, appropriate instruments were developed for designing and creating sustainable buildings in the countries concerned.
Public Private Partnership projects were funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Examples of the support DGNB provided include training DGNB advisors and raising the public’s awareness of sustainability.
