DGNB Partners

Selecting the right partners is key to the success of DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) International. The goal is to establish one cooperation partner in each country. The same basic values and principles apply in each case – in accordance with the guidelines of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), the organization must be non-governmental and non-profit. Additionally, no one from the local building or real-estate industries may be denied membership.

Entry to the DGNB Partner Network is principally open only to one council or other organization per country. It is preferable for the partner organization to be a member of the WGBC, allowing common goals to be pursued on this level as well, but this is not a mandatory requirement.

The first step to become partner is typically the formulation of a statement of interest through a letter of intent, followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (or shortly MoU) with the DGNB. There is no special protocol for the letter of intent; the potential partner has to state his interest to be part of the DGNB Network. For the MoU there is a standard template to be signed.

By signing the MoU the country becomes a non-voting member of the DGNB Partner Network. The MoU is a public declaration of the willingness of both sides to pursue future collaboration and to prepare for the adoption of the DGNB Certification System in the country in question.

Finally, to obtain full membership in the Partner Network, a Cooperation Agreement must be signed between the DGNB and the partner organization in question. The contract governs all questions of collaboration in the areas of system adaptation and system implementation. Necessary requirements for such a contract are a sufficiently strong market interest as well as a qualified local working group. In order to adapt the DGNB Core System to the country-specific requirements, this working group has to comprise experts for the following sustainable building areas: ecology, energy, building materials/pollutants, technical quality, sociocultural and functional quality, process and site quality. This is to ensure that the internationally applicable DGNB Quality Standards will be maintained throughout the adaption process.
